Keratin, Honestly
It's not a relaxer. It won't make curly hair straight. Here's what a smoothing treatment actually does — and who shouldn't bother.
Half the people who ask us about keratin want their curls gone forever. The other half are terrified it'll do exactly that. Both are working from the same misunderstanding, so let's clear it up.
A keratin smoothing treatment is not a chemical relaxer. A relaxer permanently breaks the bonds that give hair its curl — that's a structural change, and it doesn't reverse. Keratin doesn't break anything. It coats and seals the hair shaft, filling in the rough spots, then heat locks it in. Your curl pattern survives. It just behaves.
What You Actually Get
Frizz, gone. This is the real headline. Humidity stops being an event. If you've ever watched a good blowout dissolve on the walk from the car to the restaurant, this is the fix.
Drying time, cut roughly in half. Clients tell us this is the part that changes their life, not the shine. Thirty minutes with a round brush becomes twelve.
Shine. A sealed cuticle reflects light. Rough hair scatters it. That's the whole trick.
Curl that's looser and far more cooperative. A tight curl becomes a loose wave. A loose wave becomes nearly straight. What you don't get is poker-straight hair out of the shower — and if a salon promises you that from a keratin treatment, ask more questions.
How Long It Lasts
Three to five months, and where you land in that range is mostly about how you wash it. It fades gradually rather than growing out in a line, which means there's no awkward stage and no hard deadline to rebook. Your hair just slowly returns to itself.
Plan on about 2½ to 3 hours in the chair. It's a long appointment. Bring something to read.
Sulfates Will Undo It
This is the one rule that actually matters, and it's where most disappointing results come from. Sulfates strip the treatment out. Use a sulfate-free shampoo from day one or you're paying for three months and getting six weeks.
Brazilian Blowout Shampoo and Conditioner are made specifically for smoothed hair. Pureology is sulfate-free across the line and does double duty if your hair is also colored. Add Brazilian Blowout Smoothing Serum on damp hair to extend it further.
And skip the cheap drugstore bottle. We're not being snobs about this — it's the single most common reason a treatment underperforms.
Who Should Skip It
If your hair is already fine, straight, and dries fast, you're paying for a problem you don't have. Save the money.
If you love your curl pattern and wear it curly, don't. Keratin loosens curl. That's the point of it. Clients who want definition and moisture without losing shape are better served by a Deep Conditioning treatment and the right cut.
And if your hair is badly compromised — over-processed, breaking, mid-way through a color correction — smoothing isn't the first move. Repair first, then smooth. We'd rather tell you to wait than take your money twice.
Stacking It With Color
Order matters. Color first, then smooth — usually a couple of weeks apart, not the same afternoon. Smoothing over fresh color can shift your tone, and nobody wants to pay for highlights twice in a month.
Our Keratin Treatment uses Keratin Complex, and we'll consult on intensity based on your texture and what your hair has been through. That consultation isn't a formality. It's how we avoid the two bad outcomes above.
